父や兄を戦争で失った12歳の少女は、祖母と母との３人で暮らしている。身内の男性を伴わず女性が外出することの出来ないタリバン政権下、少女の母親は少女の髪を切り、彼女を少年の姿に変えて働きに出すことを思いつく。少年となった少女は父の旧友の元で働き始めるが、ある日街中の少年たちとともに宗教学校（マドラサ）へ連れて行かれてしまう・・・。
